A Stolen Masterpiece Found

November 5, 2010

On Tuesday a painting was pulled from a Sotheby’s New York auction when it was discovered as being a Degas original. The portrait of a laundrywoman with an aching tooth “Blanchisseuses Souffrant des Dents” was stolen from the Le Havre museum over 37 years ago. In honor of the resurfaced masterpiece here are a few of my favorite Degas’ from my recent visit to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Clockwise from top left:Blanchisseuses Souffrant des Dents”, via Sotheby’s, “The Star”, “Waiting”.

Wow, that’s crazy! And I love Degas’ ballet dancers—I love the way he gets the light and airiness of their costumes especially.
